Extra Caring Equals Learning (E.X.C.E.L.) Enrichment Program

The EXCEL Enrichment Program was established in 2009, under the direction and guidance of the late Mrs. Jeanette B. Sherrod. Mrs. Sherrod was an active member in the Union County Chapter of the Democratic Party, NC Democratic Women of Union County, Friendship Missionary Baptist, and several more civic, philanthropic, and religious organizations. Her leadership and volunteer positions touched many of the community members throughout Union County.

Though the program originally was closed due to expenses and poor participation, the program plans were passed down to Mrs. Sherrod’s daughter, Dr. Benita Sherrod Sanders.

With a focus on academic improvement for the youth in the community, Dr. Benita Sanders relaunched the EXCEL Enrichment Program, a 5013c Nonprofit Organization, in October of 2018.

She continues to carry the vision of promoting social action in the areas of cultural enrichment activities, historical and economical awareness, and the development of critical thinking skills.

“These children are our future, and everyone should take time out to go and read to a child and teach them cultural things to help them grow.”

-Mrs. Jeanette B. Sherrod

Our Mission

To build the self-esteem, character, and academic progress of our community’s children.

Our Philosophy

We teach by creating a meaningful, “Listen with Understanding” environment for children. Learning can be fun; therefore, each child is free to discover, explore and experiment within his/her surroundings. The teacher and child can share equal standing in learning and education so real communication may occur as we try to visualize the attitudes and ideas of each child’s expression and feelings.
